Desert Zoos & Aquariums BACK TO TOP
The Living Desert is located off highway 111 and Portola Avenue in Palm Desert. This is a moderate sized zoo and gardens featuring desert dwelling plants and animals from around the world. See mountain lions, leopards, giraffes, warthogs, tortoise, several bird species and more. A reptile exhibit displays many of the local venomous rattlesnakes and scorpions. A nursery within the gardens offers a large variety of succulent, cacti and drought tolerant plants for sale. Village WaTuTu is an authentic looking African village with eateries, souvenir shops, picnic areas and restrooms nestled between displays of camels, leopards, giraffes and a petting zoo. Don't miss their massive model train display, which operates multiple trains at once and is meticulously decorated like tourist destinations across the entire U.S. A short 0.6 mile wilderness trail loops into the local mountains to a picnic area. Overnight camps are available for the more daring.
