Treebones Resort - Big Sur is located off Highway 1 about midway between Monterey Bay and Morro Bay. Guests stay in Mongolian-style yurts. Yurts are detached circular huts with hardwood floors and canvas roof & sides. Each yurt features a small wood deck overlooking the ocean, fireplaces or space heaters, running water sinks, skylights and queen-size beds. They are basically furnished like you would expect from a hotel with linens, tables, chairs and electric lamps, etc. The property includes a small lodge & store, around 20 yurts, campsites, and a pool & hot tub. This resort is all about nature with multiple state parks located within a short distance and accomodations with panoramic ocean views. Group nature activities such as kayaking and hiking as well as massage therapy can be arranged through the resort. The lodge offers a limited continental breakfast and dinner (dinner is not included with the room rate). This is as close as you can get to luxury camping. There are no convenience stores in the area so bring a cooler with food & snack items, drinks, and even a camp stove or bar-b-que could come in handy.

TIP: We recommend requesting a yurt with a fireplace rather than a space heater. Also, a separate building houses the restrooms and showers. They are more luxurious than the standard campground versions.

Madonna Inn - San Luis Obispo is located off Highways 1 & 101 at the southern end of San Luis Obispo. This is a very interesting inn with themed rooms like the Caveman Room, Love Nest and Irish Hills to name just a few. To give you a better understanding; the Caveman Room is literally like staying in a cave with features like a shower that pours directly from the rock above, the Love Nest is almost entirely decorated in pink and has a spiral staircase that leads to a private cupola lookout, Irish Hills is almost entirely decorated in green with an abundance of leprechans and four leaf clovers. The inn also includes a restaurant, cafe, bakery and bar. The lavish decore is done to the extreme and borders on hokey if it wasn't so professionally done and meticulously maintained. We haven't stayed here in years but enjoyed it when we did. Just keep in mind that this inn receives excellent consumer ratings.
